Said Atabekov
Said Atabekov was born in 1965 in Bes-Terek village and graduated from Kasteev Art School in Shymkent in 1993. He is a Kazakh artist, a key figure in the contemporary art of Central Asia. He experiments with different artistic media: installation and performance, photography and video, and painting. The beginning of his artistic career coincided with the period of "perestroika" in the art group "Kyzyl Tractor" in the south of Kazakhstan.
His works have been presented at Suns and Neons above Kazakhstan, Yarat (Baku), The Other & Me, Sharjah Art Museum, 5th Moscow Biennale, Central Asia Pavilion at Venice Biennale, Ostalgia, New Museum (New York), Time of the Storytellers, KIASMA (Helsinki) and 9th Istanbul Biennale. One of the most recent significant exhibitions was a solo exhibition at ToBE Swiss Contemporary Art Gallery. In 2011, Atabekov received the Prince Claus Prize.
